🎉👏The Mitkof Vikings Lego Robotics team competed in the Alaska state competition on February 1st in Anchorage. The team completed three rounds with their robot that they preprogrammed to complete multiple challenges within a two and a half minute time limit. They also presented their innovative project which dealt with helping Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) attach securely to tidewater glaciers, so researchers can take samples accurately and from a safe distance. Students observed researchers from Oregon State University this past summer deal with this challenge and then designed and built an ROV with tension arms to grab onto the ice face to allow secure sampling. The team won first place for their project and fourth place in the overall competition! This earned them an invitation to compete at the national level!!🤖🧊

The Viking Volunteers crushed it once again, showing up in full force to support elementary STREAM Night last week! These incredible middle schoolers helped young learners make slime, build catapults, engineer the tallest towers, and navigate virtual reality. Your enthusiasm and generosity made the night a huge success—thank you for giving back to the elementary school and being positive role models for the next generation of middle schoolers 👏🔬🚀

The House and Senate Education Committees will take public testimony on “Alaska’s education funding crisis” this week on Wednesday and Friday. Both the House and Senate have kicked off the session with education funding as a priority, and the legislature hopes to pass a BSA bill early in the session. To that end, both the House and Senate Education Committees are offering public testimony opportunities this week to address HB 69 and the state of Alaska's education funding. This bill would introduce immediate inflation proofing and a $1,000 increase to the BSA for FY26 and an additional increase of $404 for FY27 and FY28 These committee hearings are the best opportunity for you to tell the legislature about the impacts of state funding decisions on our local budgets and programs in Petersburg. Wednesday, January 29 8:00 am - 10:00 am House Education Committee 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm Senate Education Committee - For the best opportunity to have your testimony considered, call before 4:00 pm. 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm House Education Committee - The committee will hear all testimony of individuals who are in the queue by 7 PM. Friday, January 31 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm Senate Education Committee - For the best opportunity to have your testimony considered, call before 4:00 pm. 🌊The 6th and 7th graders are gearing up for their Underwater ROV project by diving into the science of ocean currents. This week, they’ve been exploring how factors like salinity and temperature influence the movement of ocean water. Hands-on learning like this lays the foundation for their upcoming project and builds a deeper understanding of the forces shaping our marine environments! 🌊

Our LEGO robotics team has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming state competition in just a couple of weeks. This past week, they had an exciting opportunity to collaborate with researchers from Oregon State University, who had visited last summer to study LeConte Glacier using their own ROVs. The 8th graders engaged in a brainstorming session, incorporating valuable feedback from the researchers to enhance the design and functionality of their own ROV. We’re thrilled to see their creativity and determination in action and can’t wait to cheer them on when they head to state!
