Baking Club had made their first treat, chocolate chip cookies, and they were DELICIOUS! We officially had our first baking fail of the year too 😂 The bakers were resilient and thought of all sorts of creative ways to eat their flattened cookies. They had a blast and are looking forward to our next club meeting to make something pumpkiny. Tis the season 🎃 👻

Fifteen Viking Volunteers met on Sunday afternoon to help the Humane Association with cleaning and repair projects. Volunteers cleaned the walkways and dog parks, set up fencing, cleaned the memorial bricks, touched up the sign, and petted the cats. Check out the brightened sign when you drive by!

Our middle school art students have been busy exploring different techniques and media! 🌳 We began by practicing drawing ovals, cylinders, and cones to create trees and branches, developing skills for drawing intricate trees with multiple limbs. Afterward, we transitioned to an oil pastel project, celebrating the start of the fall season. 🍂 In late September, students learned the proportions of portrait drawing through a set of guidelines. "Start by drawing one eye and use it as a measure for the rest of your portrait." 🖌️ Students applied these rules, using graphite H and B pencils to add value, and completed a half-printed portrait, building up depth and shading. Now, we're diving into clay work! The MS art students are hand-building with clay, learning techniques like wedging, maintaining proper thickness, and the "cross-hatch and attach" method for joining pieces. We’re taking inspiration from Tim Burton characters for our clay projects—stay tuned for some spooky and creative pieces! 👻✨

Did you know that our middle school has a Lego Robotics team that travels and competes against other teams in the state? Every year, FIRST® LEGO® League releases a new Challenge based on a real-world, scientific theme. This year's theme is Submerged. Students will learn about how and why people explore the oceans. 🌊 We can't wait to see how they do this year!

Today's lunch hit close to home. The menu included "Alaskan Caught Black Cod with Carrot Top Pesto and Cucumber Salad". The black cod was provided by OBI, the garlic was from Farragut Farms, the cucumber and onions were from Washington farms. As part of being Community Eligible Provision schools - this lunch was free for all students, every lunch is! The food was locally sourced in support of the SCALES grant (supporting community agriculture and local education systems) the grant that Ms. Carlee secured to bring the farm to our school.

Eighth grade students are learning to use the programming language, JavaScript, to program variables, consisting of animated shapes and sprites (or characters) and learning to set up different functions in a draw loop. This skill is one of the essential building blocks as students learn to program their own video games (which will be completed at the end of this quarter).

Here are 6th and 7th graders sharing their models for why the Earth experiences seasons. Students collected data on sunlight angle, temperature, and day length to create a model to explain why we experience seasons. These photos show them explaining to their peers what they figured out in a mini "poster session" similar to one they might experience in college.
